Installation of flowline sections for bp’s ultra-deepwater GTA development offshore Mauritania & Senegal, requiring redesign of structures and appendages and bespoke engineering and fabrication to modify S-lay installation vessel for J-mode activities.

Company: BP

Location: Offshore Mauritania & Senegal

2800 m

Max. water depth

Scope of work

  • Installation of outstanding section of 2x 16-inch production flowlines (recover both lines and lay 20 km of south line & 50 km of north line (incl. 1350 m CRA sections for both lines)
  • Installation of 2 CMSs (corrosion monitoring system) near the CS / CRA transition for both lines (one Sensorlink and one Cybernetix)
  • Installation of FTA (flowline termination assembly) at the end of each line in J-lay mode (water depth varies from 2665 m (recovery side) to 1320 m (FTA side) (2 in total)
  • Installation of 4x 10-inch CRA infield production flowlines (length variation from 1030 m to 2970 m)
  • Installation of FTAs in J-lay mode at both ends of each 10-inch line (8 in total)
  • Installation of PWMCs (pipe walking mitigation clamp) in J-lay for the 6 different lines (2 x 16” and 4 x 10”)

Specials & challenges

  • Extensive, complex installation scope with short lead-in time (5 months between contract award & arrival of vessels in field)
  • Aggressive start date to facilitate client’s first gas pledge
  • Taking over installation scope from existing contractor mid-project
  • Optimisation & redesign of FTAs and pipeline appendages
  • Bespoke engineering & fabrication (aft-mounted portal frame) to modify Pioneering Spirit for first-time J-mode pipeline and structure installation
  • Record pipelay depths
  • Installation of multiple pipelines shorter than the water depth
  • Precise hooking-in and out of suction pile pre-installed at 2750 m water depth
  • Stringent welding criteria for CRA pipe
